The Red Sea Research Center at KAUST is seeking a Biological Research Technician for an initial two-year appointment. The role will be instrumental in overseeing the development, inventory and functioning of project laboratories. This position covers a broad scope of effort that includes collecting, processing and analyzing ecological samples, participating in fieldwork and research cruises, overseeing procurement needs for fully functional campus and ship-based laboratories and managing support staff to ensure up-to-date laboratory inventories and suitable stock levels.

The Technician role will contribute to our understanding of the major processes driving the structure and function of marine habitats, in particular how natural and human disturbances influence the biodiversity patterns and biological production. 

1. Undergraduate training or higher as a biological research technician;
2. Experience in biological laboratory and field operations in a technical capacity;
3. 4-7 years of experience in related efforts.
4. Interest, ability and experience in participating in research cruises;
5. Analytical experience such as with HPLC and nutrient samples;
6. Experience with analytical tools, including flow cytometry; gas chromatography, spectrophotometric analyzers, elemental analyzers, SDS-PAGE and Western Blot;
7. Experience with software packages, CHEMTAX, MS Office, and ability to learn job-specific software as required;
8. Able to work with minimal guidance and handle multiple tasks;
9. Able to prioritize work assignments in a busy office environment;
10. Ability to work flexible hours as needed;
11. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with colleagues.
Main Responsibilities
• Collection of biological and environmental samples in the field;
• Processing samples for elemental and stable isotope analyses;
• Nutrient analysis in water samples;
• Analysis of chlorophyll a in water samples;
• Quantification of total organic carbon in sediment samples;
• Characterization of sediment grain particle-size;
• Stock management;
• Assist researchers and students ordering consumables and equipment to the lab;
• Handling aquarium experiments;
• Other duties as assigned by Line Manager.
